How food security law will benefit people of Assam, Bhupen Borah explains

At Biswanath Chariali in Tezpur Parliamentary Constituency

AICC secretary Bhupen Borah has recently addressed youths of Tezpur Parliamentary constituency gathered at Biswanath college auditorium. As he said later, he was surprised to find that youths of the area wanted to know more about the Food Security Bill, and what it would actually mean for them and their families. Borah explained it in simple terms and said…
every three out of the four people of Assam would be directly benefited by this landmark legislation. Already, the Central government has issued an Ordinance towards the Food Security law.
In the current monsoon session in Parliament, the Food Security Bill, which would benefit 75 per cent of India’s rural population and half of the nation’s urban population, was introduced. As Prime Minister said in his Independence Day speech from the ramparts of the Red Fort: “This (food security law) is the largest effort of its kind in the whole world”.
Look at the sheer size of the beneficiaries. About 81 crore Indians would be entitled to receive rice at 3 rupees per kg, wheat at 2 rupees per kg and coarse grains at 1 rupee per kg. And mind it. This has been possible because of the hard work of India’s farmers including those from Assam. The country’s food-grain production reached a record level of 25.9 crore ton in 2011-12.
"Our farmers deserve a big round of applause" Borah said.
