Who is Bhupen Borah

IN June 2013, two-time MLA from Assam, Bhupen Kumar Borah was chosen as Secretary, All India Congress Committee. As he began his innings at 24 Akbar Road, the headquarters of the Indian National Congress, he had a moment of satisfaction as well as a sense of higher responsibilities.
The son of a school teacher, Borah was highly active in politics right from his college days. In 1989, he was vice-president of North Lakhimpur College Students Union, and then he became the general secretary of Dibrugarh University Post Graduate Students Union. No wonder, after completing his masters in political science, he became a full-time Youth Congress activist and went up in the ladder to become the president of Assam Pradesh Youth Congress.
In 1998, he was handpicked as a joint secretary of Assam Pradesh Congress Committee. Three years later, he got an elevation as its secretary. Between 2004 and 2013, he was the general secretary of Assam Pradesh Congress Committee and played a key role in consolidating the Congress party’s position in state. In the Assembly, he has raised a number of important issues concerning the state in general, and the North Bank of the Brahmaputra comprising Tezpur and Lakhimpur Parliamentary constituencies in particular. No wonder, he became the recipient of the "Best MLA Award-2010" given by  TV news channel DY 365. The award was presented by the Speaker of the Assam Legislative Assembly.
Borah was first elected as an MLA from Bihpuria assembly seat in 2006. Five years later, he received a far bigger mandate from the people, as every second person of his assembly constituency voted in his favour in a multi-cornered fight. In 2014 Lok Sabha poll, he unsuccessfully contested from Tezpur seat. Despite he secured more votes than the 2009 winning candidate, he suffered defeat reportedly because of consolidation of votes in favour of one party.
In Assam government, Borah had served as Parliamentary Secretary in charge of home and power. He was also a spokesperson for the state government. He resigned from those posts after he was appointed as AICC secretary on June 17, 2013.
The top Congress leadership spotted Borah when he worked hard as AICC observer for four assembly constituencies in Arunachal Pradesh (2010), in Cooch Bihar district of West Bengal (2011) and then in three assembly constituencies of William Nagar district in Meghalaya (2013).
“Aggressive and outspoken, he (Borah) is one of the vocal MLAs of the Congress in Assam”, said a report published in The Indian Express on June 27, 2013. (Read the Article).
Among games he plays, he is attracted to volleyball. Currently, he is President of Assam Volleyball Association, Vice-President of Volleyball Federation of India (VFI) and also, the Vice-Prsident of Assam Olympic Association.
Married to Dr Mousumi Borgohain Borah, an assistant professor of Gauhati Medical College and Hospital, Borahs have two sons.
